Amazon.com Whether or not you can sympathize with its fascistic/vigilante approach to law enforcement, Dirty Harry (directed by star Clint Eastwood's longtime friend and directorial mentor, Don Siegel) is one hell of a cop thriller. The movie makes evocative use of its San Francisco locations as cop Harry Callahan (Eastwood) tracks the elusive "Scorpio killer" who has been terrorizing the city by the Bay. As the psychopath's trail grows hotter, Harry becomes increasingly impatient and intolerant of the frustrating obstacles (departmental red tape, individuals' civil rights) that he feels are keeping him from doing his job. A characteristically taut and tense piece of filmmaking from Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Shootist, Escape from Alcatraz), it also remains a fascinating slice of American pop culture. It was a big hit (followed by four sequels) that obviously reflected--or exploited--the almost obsessive or paranoid fears and frustrations many Americans felt about crime in the streets. At a time when "law and order" was a familiar slogan for political candidates, Harry Callahan may have represented neither, but from his point of view his job was simple: stop criminals. To him that end justified any means he deemed necessary. --Jim Emerson

"Dirty Harry" is a great film that will have you rushing to the movie store to get part 2! This film is Clint Eastwood at his best! The acting by Eastwood is phenomenal.
"Dirty Harry" is about Inspector Harry Callahan (Eastwood). He is the kind of guy that likes to work alone and finish the job right. Callahan is assigned to the case of a sniper called Scorpio (Andy Robinson). Scorpio kidnaps a girl and holds her for ransom, which without Callahan's approval, the mayor decides to pay the money, and has Callahan deliver the funds. Smelling a trap, Scorpio has Callahan run to numerous phone booths to make sure he is not followed.
If you are a fan of action, suspense films, or of Eastwood, you will very much enjoy this film.
"Awesome Flick". June 26, 2010 Dr. Feelgood (USA) Probably, the best, in the five film series, simply because it was well executed, and fresh, when it first came out, which still holds up now, years later. With a strong performance from Clint Eastwood, and some good action, throughout the film.

trying to replace some of our movies with dvd.
A Good Eastwood Movie. June 4, 2010 Gary Peterson (San Diego, California USA) It may seem hard to believe, but until last night I'd never seen a "Dirty Harry" movie. Oh, I'd seen plenty of ads, heard jokes, read reviews, and had seen other of Clint Eastwood's movies but, in fact, had never viewed "Dirty Harry" or any of the sequels. Well, my wife and I were looking over the cheap DVD racks at a major discounter and there were a selection of Dirty Harry Series movies available at a bargain price. My wife (from Russia) had never heard of them, but I convinced her to try a couple: "Dirty Harry" and "The Enforcer."
"Dirty Harry" is a fine movie and we both enjoyed it. Dirty Harry, of course, is a self-styled, politically incorrect, do-it-my-own way type of San Francisco police inspector out to rid the world of bad guys in as short a time as possible and without all the modern niceties.Eastwood's Harry character is not unlike many of the characters he has played in his famous western films. I got a chuckle out of his tough-guy doings and my wife commented that she thought police work should be more angled in that direction (remember, she's from Russia). In any case, it was an interesting movie regarding the rise and demise of a serial killer and was nicely put together. I particularly enjoyed viewing mid-70s San Francisco. The night photography was slightly too dark for good visibility on our home screen and the sound was not the best. Of course, the bargain price on the 40-year-old movie made up for the deficiency. It was an excellent movie. We're looking forward to "The Enforcer" and possibly several others.
